Frequently Asked Questions About UIF

What is UIF?
UIF stands for Unemployment Insurance Fund. It’s a government fund that provides short-term relief to workers who lose their jobs, become ill, or take maternity leave. Both employees and employers contribute 1% each of the employee’s remuneration.
What is the maximum UIF contribution?
UIF contributions are capped at the earnings threshold. For 2025, the maximum monthly remuneration for UIF purposes is R17,712. This means the maximum employee contribution is R177.12/month and the maximum employer contribution is also R177.12/month.
Can I claim UIF if I resign?
No. UIF benefits are only available if you are dismissed, retrenched, or your fixed-term contract ends. Voluntary resignation does not qualify for UIF benefits.
How much will I receive from UIF?
UIF pays between 38% and 60% of your previous salary, depending on your income level. The benefit is calculated using the Income Replacement Rate (IRR) formula. Lower earners receive a higher percentage. Benefits are paid for a maximum of 238 days (approximately 8 months).
Do contract workers need to contribute to UIF?
Yes. All employees who work more than 24 hours per month must contribute to UIF, including contract and part-time workers. Domestic workers and foreigners with valid work permits are also included.
